Is the New Pope a NAZI?

Of course not! It's a ridiculous question, really.

yes it is a ridiculous question...
but one I expect to hear raised quite a lot now. Particularly references to his time in the Hitler youth. Of course that was actually compulsory but I am sure that if mentioned it will only be a line followed by a huge 'but'

Check out Andrew Sullivan's website for a view of someone going way over the top over the election of the new pope. Sheesh.

Well... Hitler was Catholic. So it's not really THAT far fetched. But I don't think JP2 would have made a Nazi his trusted advisor.

Kav,

I haven't read Sullivan on this (or for a while) but I've been reading that he's going nuts about it.

Shinobi,

Honestly I don't know, but the question is still pretty ridiculous. I don't actually think that means people shouldn't raise it... I've raised it by mentioning it, but it's not pertinent. It's like talking about the Vietnam War for a presidential election.

There are a lot better worries about him, and in the end the Church is not a decisive force in world affairs in spite of all it's influence, because of how it uses that influence I suppose, and there is not likely to be a huge shift in that. The only likely huge shift would be in a liberal direction, promoting egalitarian economics and human rights ala the South American church.

It's like we don't have historic events right now happening so we have to go back to Vietnam Protestors and NAZIs.

That is a very interesting statement. Why is this? Do we have some sort of obsession with the past, are we past centric? of course we should learn from past mistakes, but do we? Do we instead glorify the past and so continually hark back to a time when 'things were simpler - more black and white', even though that is not really true? Hmmm.
